Audacity 1.2.6

Windows has absolutely no ‘Audacity’ to provide good audio editing programs. This multi-platform open source editor is great at what it does. It has 32-bit floating point audio, a clean uncluttered interface, good plug-in support and project management features.

This editor can record and play sounds and import WAV, AIFF, MP3, and OGG as well as FLAC with this version right out-of-the-box. You can freely edit using cut, copy, and paste features, with unlimited undo functionality, mix tracks, and use the eye-catching Beat Analyzer.

The program also has a built-in amplitude-envelope editor, a customizable spectroprogram mode, and a frequency-analysis window for audio-analysis applications. Built-in effects include bass boost, wah wah, and noise removal. The program also supports VST plug-in effects.

Don’t expect this to be a commercial program such as Cool Edit Pro or Sony’s Soundforge but if you are looking for a free feature-rich audio editor, it doesn’t get better than this.

For: Powerful audio editor, additional plug-in support.
Against: needs more features but we are only being picky.
